Coastal Waters Forecast Area: Gascoyne Coastal Waters
Gnaraloo gets a 12.5 and along with Esperance, they are to two best places to sail in Western Australia. Gnaraloo is a fourteen hour drive from Perth, if you have the time it is well worth checking out.
You can bring your camping gear and stay in a tent, after a while the people slowly go feral. Camping is done at Three Mile Camp, it is right next to the water and well worth staying at. The home-stead is for those not into camping so much. There are self contained huts to stay at but it is a drive to the beach. I like that more than camping just because I am lazy. The campsite is situated right next to a sailing spot called Tombstones. It is only for experienced wave sailors. You have to walk down to the beach (rocks). After walking over rocks(reef) and sailing over razor sharp reef you get to one of the best waves in the world. It is best to have booties, a couple of pairs would be advisable as it's a long way back to get some more. This goes for all your gear, make sure you have enough if you break something. Nothing worst than to have to sit it out cause you broke gear. If Tombstones is not for you then on a seabreeze there is a spot called The Bay just around the corner. After driving twelve hours everything is just around the corner! In the middle of the bay there is a bomby that you can sail on without the reef and you launch from a beach, not like the rocks at Tombstones. The waves are great and not as hard as Tombstones. Towards the boat ramp beginners can sail but take care that they are not blown out to sea.
If you plan to sail The Bay. take a small boat to rescue people as it can be a long walk home. The sunsets are unbelievable. You will never be the same after a visit to Gnaraloo and it takes a bit of time adjusting back into city life again.
